Abstract

Based on the four types of Group Decision Support Systems (GDSS) defined by DeSanctis and Gallupe, this study investigated which type of GDSS firms prefer and what factors influence their selection. The factors included in the study were organizational structural characteristics, task characteristics, communication characteristics, and organizational culture types, with organizational culture types classified into six categories through cluster analysis. The results showed that among the four types of GDSS, domestic firms most preferred the local area decision network type. The factors influencing GDSS selection were organizational structural characteristics and communication characteristics. When examined in relation to cultural characteristics, organizational structural characteristics were the significant factor for firms belonging to culture types 1, 3, 4, and 6, while communication characteristics were identified as the important factor in GDSS type selection for firms classified under culture types 2 and 5.
