Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate that the effect of the strength of network ties on performance can vary depending on the nature of the project. Existing network studies have presented contrasting arguments: one emphasizing the importance of collecting new information through weak ties, and the other arguing that building trust between partners through strong ties is effective for knowledge transfer. However, this study seeks to verify that the effect of network tie strength on performance can differ depending on the degree to which a project requires creativity. In the film industry, the production and export processes conducted at the project team level were classified into two categories: the production process was defined as a project requiring high creativity, while the export (distribution) of completed films was defined as a project requiring low creativity. To measure the performance generated at these two stages, artistic indicators were used for performance up to the production process, while commercial indicators were used for performance in the export (distribution) process. For this study, Korean films that were exported overseas or submitted to international film festivals from 2000 to 2006 were selected as the subjects of analysis. To test the arguments of this paper, we analyzed how network ties affected the export performance and film festival award outcomes of the films under analysis. Through empirical analysis, this study demonstrates that in film production networks, stronger ties have a negative effect on the artistic performance of films, but a positive effect on their commercial performance.
