Abstract

This study sought to examine whether the factors influencing film performance differ in their impact between domestic performance and overseas export performance due to differences in cultural environments and film market conditions. To this end, independent variables including director and star power, genre, whether a major production company was involved, production budget, film festival award history, whether a major distributor was involved, and whether a specialized overseas distributor was involved were extracted based on prior research, and domestic performance, total export performance, and regional export performance were set as dependent variables for empirical analysis. For the empirical analysis, regression analysis and Tobit regression analysis were conducted on 201 Korean films—excluding short films and animations—out of a total of 222 Korean films released between 2003 and 2005. The analysis results showed that differences can arise between domestic and overseas export performance factors for film products, with notable differences in the influence of director and star power, genre preferences, and production budgets. Additionally, regional differences in the variables of film festival award history and specialized overseas distributors were confirmed. Moreover, despite these differences, consistent with prior research findings, it was confirmed that domestic success remains an important factor for a film's success overseas.
