Abstract

Although it is known that employees' physical appearance broadly influences not only hiring decisions but also promotions, compensation, and interpersonal relationships in the workplace, few studies have been conducted in earnest within the Korean corporate context. This study tested the hypothesis that, among female office workers who are sensitive to appearance, greater physical attractiveness positively influences promotion, but that self-esteem and interpersonal relationship quality mediate this relationship. As for the research methodology, after establishing hypotheses and a research model based on prior studies, the study relied on survey research, analyzing questionnaire response data collected from 188 female workers employed at corporations, research institutes, and other organizations in Seoul and the metropolitan area. All variables were measured based on respondents' subjective evaluations, and by constructing and comparing multiple structural models among the variables, the study sought to demonstrate that appearance influences promotion through the mediation of self-esteem and interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, it was demonstrated to a certain extent that the mediation of these two variables is not simultaneous but sequentially linked. Statistical processing of the data was performed using AMOS 4.0 and SPSS 12.0, and hypotheses were tested through confirmatory factor analysis of measurements, goodness-of-fit analysis of models, and comparative analysis of structural models. By integrating the fragmented relationships among appearance, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and promotion into a single causal model, this study presented an integrated perspective on the relationships among these variables, and revealed that if physically attractive women are associated with workplace success, it is not merely because of their attractive appearance but because appearance positively influences self-esteem and interpersonal relationships. Additionally, the implications and limitations of the study, along with suggestions for future researchers, were presented in the conclusion.
