Abstract

Although the importance of professionals in organizations has been increasing in recent years, research on their characteristics remains considerably insufficient. This study first reviewed the research methodology on dual commitment and the relationship between organizational commitment and professional commitment, and then sought to identify the common determinants of organizational commitment and professional commitment among professionals working in organizations using a parallel model. A total of 489 questionnaires obtained from researchers were analyzed. Internal locus of control as a personal characteristic; job challenge and job importance among job characteristics; expected utility of the current job and career satisfaction among career characteristics; and organizational support, supervisor support, and coworker support among social support variables were found to be factors that commonly influence both organizational commitment and professional commitment.
