Abstract

This study sought to identify the key management issues and critical success factors that domestic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) consider in the informatization process, and to understand how these key management issues and critical success factors vary according to organizational characteristics and what relationships exist among them. To this end, a survey was conducted among managers of 110 domestic SMEs. The research findings indicate that domestic SMEs recognized the construction and utilization of internal communication networks, the construction and effective use of databases, business standardization, and systems integration as important management issues. As critical success factors for the successful implementation of these initiatives, top management's understanding and support for computerization, standardization systems, user understanding and participation in the computerization process, and software reflecting user requirements were recognized as important factors. Meanwhile, the perceived importance of these key management issues and success factors varied depending on each organization's characteristics (industry, strategy, information systems level, and business activity support level), and a close relationship was found to exist between the identified key management issues and success factors.
