Abstract

This study originated from a concern about how academia can play a substantive and meaningful role in advancing Korea's service industry to a higher level and in leading world-class services, given the current situation in which Korea's service economy is rapidly expanding and diverse forms of services are advancing into the global market riding the Korean Wave (Hallyu). To address this concern, it was deemed important to first grasp the trends of the global academic community and investigate the demands of the industry sector seeking to respond to a challenging future, and then find ways to converge these perspectives. Accordingly, this study derived 10 major themes and 37 sub-themes for a domestic survey reflecting Korean industry and academic opinions, based on the latest global Service Research Priorities (SRP) that the research team had developed through participation in a global research network, so as to correspond with worldwide service paradigm trends. The study then surveyed service experts from both academia and industry regarding the importance of the SRPs, the current level of research, and the capabilities and environment for domestic service research, and derived implications. The 10 major SRP themes are evenly distributed across five domains of the service value chain system. Specifically, the "inputs and resources" domain includes "utilization of big data"; the "goals and values" domain includes "transformative service for a sustainable society" and "understanding value creation" and "enhancing service experience"; the "means and processes of production" domain includes "stimulating service innovation," "developing service networks and systems," and "utilizing service technology"; the "environment and strategy" domain includes "understanding services in the context of globalization" and "research on Korean-style services"; and finally, the "output and outcomes" domain includes "service productivity and performance." The priority analysis results showed that among the 10 SRPs, the highest-priority themes where the current research level lagged most behind the perceived importance were "utilization of big data," "transformative service for a sustainable society," and "understanding value creation." The themes where industry's sense of urgency exceeded academic awareness were "service productivity and performance" and "understanding Korean-style services." Since industry perceived all themes as more important than academia did, there is a need to expedite the promotion of academic research, and for themes where the industry-academia perception gap is large, it is necessary to facilitate mutual communication and build consensus. Through this study, the usefulness of industry-academia perception surveys through which academia can share industry's practical awareness of issues was discovered, and high-urgency common themes that could be pursued through joint industry-academia research were identified.
