Abstract

Many nanotechnologies are being rapidly developed and driving economic growth. Nanotechnologies are being applied across various industrial sectors for use in new materials or products. Selecting nanotechnologies that generate good performance and are needed both domestically and internationally from among numerous nanotechnology alternatives is critically important for a firm's business operations, yet such technology selection is extremely difficult. This study proposes an integrated analytical method combining AHP/DEA-AR (Analytic Hierarchy Process/Data Envelopment Analysis-Assurance Region) analysis and AHP rating analysis, which can be utilized by firms to accurately evaluate numerous nanotechnology alternatives. The proposed integrated method evaluates the technology application performance of nanotechnology alternatives to calculate performance scores for each alternative, while simultaneously evaluating the necessity of each technology alternative to calculate necessity scores, thereby producing a combined score for each alternative. In this study, to select nanotechnologies with good performance and high necessity, six technology evaluation and selection criteria were established, and a survey was administered to nanotechnology experts regarding the technology alternatives, after which evaluation data for each nanotechnology alternative were collected for the six criteria. The six criteria are divided into those that evaluate technology performance and those that evaluate necessity. To evaluate the performance of nanotechnology alternatives, expert evaluation values are normalized, and then the AHP/DEA-AR method is applied. Specifically, AHP is used to establish the Assurance Region (AR) to determine the weight ranges that can be used in DEA. After establishing the AR, DEA-AR is used to calculate the performance scores of the nanotechnology alternatives. Additionally, to evaluate the necessity of nanotechnology alternatives, the AHP rating method is used to calculate the necessity scores of the nanotechnology alternatives. The performance score and necessity score for each technology alternative are summed to produce the combined score for each alternative, and the technology alternative with the highest combined score is ultimately selected as the nanotechnology with good performance and high necessity. The results of applying the proposed method to an actual nanotechnology selection case confirmed that the proposed method can objectively evaluate nanotechnology alternatives and rationally perform technology selection.
