Abstract

The purpose of this study is to redefine the concept of multimedia information systems, examine the characteristic factors of multimedia information systems, and identify which characteristic factors most significantly affect the effectiveness of corporate employee training. To achieve this research objective, we first synthesized prior literature on multimedia systems to establish a classification framework for multimedia information systems. We then developed a research model and hypotheses based on theoretical prior research in the fields of education and educational technology, and collected data from actual corporate multimedia-based training settings to conduct statistical analysis using multivariate analytical techniques. This study holds primary significance as an initial research endeavor in the field of business administration, undertaken at a time when, despite many scholars recognizing the importance and necessity of research on the business applications of multimedia technology, there has been virtually no applied research on multimedia from a business administration perspective. Therefore, the significance and importance of this study, which applied findings from prior research in educational technology and management information systems in the multimedia domain to corporate employee training in the business administration field, is considered well-justified at this juncture. The major research procedures of this study can be summarized as follows. First, a classification framework for multimedia information systems was developed by synthesizing existing research on multimedia systems. Second, the theoretical model of this study was developed and research hypotheses were formulated through a review of existing literature on the characteristics and effects of multimedia information systems in the fields of educational technology and management information systems. Third, to enhance the validity of the questionnaire, a pilot test of the questionnaire developed in this study was conducted with experts from professional multimedia content development firms and several faculty members specializing in educational technology, business administration, and multimedia engineering. Fourth, a preliminary investigation of firms where survey administration was feasible was conducted, and the human resource development institutes of Korea's top five conglomerates were selected as the sample group, as these institutes intensively provide professional and standardized training through diverse educational training programs utilizing multimedia information systems in dedicated multimedia training facilities. Fifth, questionnaires were collected over approximately two months from trainees who had received education using multimedia information systems at the human resource development institutes of the top five conglomerates, and 517 faithfully completed questionnaires were selected for statistical analysis. Sixth, factor analysis and reliability analysis were conducted to assess the validity and reliability of the extracted factors, regression analysis was performed to test the research hypotheses formulated in this study, and finally, the results were summarized and research implications were presented.
