Abstract

Since the introduction of management studies in Korea, the discipline has made significant contributions to the advancement of scholarship and business management. However, the rapid changes in the business environment in recent times have necessitated a reassessment of the present and future of management research. This paper reviews the general trends in the philosophy of science to discuss the current state of management research and its identity as an academic discipline. In particular, it examines the problems associated with positivism and the impact that postmodernist thought may have on future management research. In conclusion, management research should adopt a more tolerant attitude to foster a broader research climate and should expand its research subjects to attempt integration with other fields. Research methods must also be diversified to overcome the limitations of positivism, and researchers should anticipate changes in the business environment when selecting research topics and develop appropriate research methodologies accordingly.
