Abstract

This study was motivated by the observation that despite considerable interest and extensive research on the Strategic Use of Information Technology (hereafter abbreviated as SUIT), there have been virtually no systematic and scholarly attempts to establish and advance this area as an important subfield of information systems and organizational research. Accordingly, the study was conducted with three objectives. First, to analyze how research on the strategic use of information systems or information technology originated and developed over the past decade and under what circumstances. Second, to systematically analyze the positioning of such studies in terms of academic maturity in this field, thereby identifying research trends and the factors that led to their development. Third, based on this analysis, to suggest what future research is needed to enhance the academic maturity of this field and to explain and predict phenomena related to Korean firms. The development of SUIT research is divided into four stages: Stage 1, the period of phenomenon observation and research foundation building; Stage 2, the early research introduction period; Stage 3, the late research introduction period; and Stage 4, the research growth period. Of the 52 studies across these four stages, excluding 5 monographs, a total of 47 major studies—comprising 40 papers published in major academic journals and 7 doctoral dissertations—were analyzed according to the scholarly nature and content of the research. When the scholarly characteristics of the research were classified into a 2×2 matrix along two dimensions—the nature of the study and the presence of empirical analysis—resulting in four categories of "conceptual research," "case research," "mathematical modeling research," and "multivariate model empirical research," the majority of studies were found to be concentrated in conceptual and case research. Regarding the analysis by research content, SUIT research was categorized into three types: first, research on the sources of competitive advantage; second, research on the methods of achieving competitive advantage; and third, research on measuring competitive advantage (performance). Based on these analytical results, future research directions for advancing the SUIT research field and the role of SUIT research grounded in Korean business realities were discussed.
