Abstract

The interest in patents belonging to a patent pool - the coalition formation for a consortium standard – is on the rise. There is lack of research on the relationship between where the knowledge for patents in a patent pool comes from and the innovation performance. Thus, the current study examines the relationship between the different types of knowledge search to create a patent and innovation performance. We analyze 662 patents belonging to rival DVD 3C and 6C patent pools. In particular, we classify the types of knowledge search considering both an organizational boundary and a new network boundary generated by belonging to a patent pool, a form of multipartner alliance. The empirical results show that knowledge search in a same organization and in a same patent pool leads to higher innovation performance. And, knowledge search in a different organization belonging to a different patent pool also leads to higher innovation performance. On the other hand, knowledge search in a different organization and in a same patent pool leads to lower innovation performance. The current study suggests the importance of technology as a new characteristic of knowledge which enables the exploitation of internal knowledge to bring about higher innovation performance. Further, we highlight that knowledge search in a same patent pool characterized by cooperative relationship is negatively related with innovation performance, while knowledge search in different patent pool characterized by competitive relationship is positively related.
