웹 개발자들의 HTML5 채택 저항 요인에 관한 연구

HTML5는 기존 HTML 기반 웹 브라우저와 호환성을 유지하면서도 다양한 웹 어플리케이션을 개발할 수 있는 언어로 현재 웹 환경을 플랫폼으로 진화시킬 수 있는 기술적 토대를 제공한다. 변화하는 웹 환경에 적합한 표준임에도 불구하고 HTML5의 확산 속도는 생각처럼 빠르지 않다. 본 연구에서는 웹 서비스 제작에 관여하고 있는 다양한 전문가들이 HTML5에 대해 어느 정도 채택 의사를 가지고 있는지 살펴보았다. HTML5는 웹 제작 프로그래밍에 사용되는 언어이므로 일반 사용자의 수용 의사보다 웹 비즈니스를 이끌어가는 전문가들의 결정이 중요하기 때문이다. 기존에 논의되어 온 혁신에 대한 저항을 중심으로 혁신 상품의 속성, 개인 특성, 확산 메커니즘, 상황적 요인들이 HTML5의 채택 저항에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 혁신의 상대적 이점이 높을수록, 지각된 위험이 낮을수록, 웹 제작에 사용했던 기존 경험에 대한 만족도가 낮을수록, 온라인 커뮤니티를 통한 정보 습득이 많을수록, 향후 HTML5 사용에 대한 전망이 긍정적일수록 HTML5 채택 저항이 낮은 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
HTML5 is a markup language of the Internet used for structuring and presenting content on the World Wide Web. It is an appropriate tool for developing Web application since it is compatible with previous HTML based Web browser. Many features of HTML5 have been built with the consideration of being able to run on low-powered devices such as smartphones and tablets. Therefore HTML5 is a potential candidate for making cross-platform application. However, it is rarely adopted in South Korea. This study focused on the intention of adopting HTML5 in web developer group. An online survey was conducted with 185 web developers affiliated to Korean Digital Enterprise Association. We examined innovation characteristics, individual characteristics, propagation mechanism, and social context as the factors affecting resistance of HTML5 adoption. Hierachical multiple regression was performed to examine hypotheses, and four variable blocks were entered at different steps. The demographic variable (comprising gender, age, education, career) was entered first as a control variable, followed by innovation characteristics (i.e. relative advantage and perceived risk), individual characteristics (i.e. innovativeness and prior experience), propagation mechanism (i.e. community channel and mass media channel), and situational factors (i.e. organizational environment and future prospect) Results showed that high relative advantage, low perceived risk, low satisfaction in the previously used programming language, more communication with community channel, positive future prospect of HTML5 are likely to reduce resistance to HTML5 adoption. Previous studies of programming language concentrate heavily on the relative advantage of innovation. This study considered a wide range of factors including not only the innovation characteristics of product but also individual traits, propagation mechanism, and situational factors based on the innovation resistance model. Furthermore, this study focused on web developers’ intention of using HTML5. It may contribute to explain why HTML5 is rarely adopted between web developers in South Korea.

·저자 정재민은 현재 카이스트 경영대학 IT/미디어 전공 부교수로 재직 중이다. 서강대학교 신문방송학과에서 학부 및 석사 과정을 마쳤고, 미국 플로리다 대학교 커뮤니케이션 스쿨에서 미디어경영 세부전공으로 박사를 취득하였다. 박사 학위 취득 이후 웨스트 플로리다 대학, 서울여자대학교를 거쳐 현재 카이스트에 재직 중이다. 주요연구분야는 IT/미디어 생산자 및 이용자 분석, 미디어기업 전략 및 산업 정책 분석이다.
